all week i have been groovin’ to old r & b joints that are just good for the soul. in particular, i’ve been fascinated with the nostalgic jams of r & b girl groups of the mid 90’s -early 2000’s. whether it’s being in the kitchen getting my hair straightened by my grandma, or over a friends house have a dance contest; listening to these groups has brought me back to the exact place and time when i first heard their songs. what’s so great about the groups listed below, is that fact that each member’s talent was evident. all of these ladies had amazing voices that united to make powerful and soulful harmonies that are rarely streamed through today’s radio stations.
I. zhane (1993)-
you can’t tell me this wasn’t the jam! and did you peep that howard university sweatshirt?
II. brownstone (1994)
brownstone simply had some of the best vocals in the ‘90’s. get all the way into the 2:48 mark.
III. divine (1996)
clearly, the budget for this video was 6 pence but, you can’t deny the talent and amazing harmonies of these beautiful ladies.
IV: allure (1997)
i don’t even know where to start with this song! featuring 112 was just the cherry on the top! this is the perfect marriage of harmonies and blueprint for how a duet should be done.
V: lovher (2001)
i feel sorry for anyone who is near me when this song comes on. i know almost all the words and the raw emotion just hits home. i am sure someone on st. clair can relate.
i wish these groups were still around to give us great hits as mentioned above; but in the meantime itunes will serve as my time machine back to soulful singing that use to be the standard of 90’s and early 2000’s.
